Eagle Creek with the masses - 07-31-2011

Post by bunbunaz » July 31st, 2011, 5:07 pm

Great day for a hike in the gorge -- and this hike is a popular one. Probably saw 100 people out on the trail today. So if you're looking for solitude, you'll have to hike this during the winter months! Water wasn't roaring as much as my previous visit (Feb 2010) but tunnel falls is still impressive. And the spray coming off felt so good on a warm day like today. Saw quite a few backpackers on their way out during the morning and saw loads of people coming to play in the creek on the trip back in the afternoon. A good hike and the longest hike my wife has done -- her new personal best for mileage.

I forgot to mention...if anyone finds a pair of Serengeti glasses, well I was the one who lost them & i think it was somewhere between 7.5 mile camp and Tunnel falls. & should you find them & not retrun them please treat them better than I did.

@Mayhem: I'm sure we passed along the trail and exchanged pleasantries! And no, we didn't see any sunglasses. :(

I have been on the way out but never on the way back :) Even at 8am I have been the only car in the lot, but on the return you would think there was a stadium with the Blazers or Timbers playing :)

I have yet to see Eagle creek in the crowds. I litterally have never gone hiking there when it HASNT been raining or at least really dreary. I go on purpose those days, so I get better waterfall pictures, and of course, the crowds.

Feb 2010 was a great time due to unusually non-existant snowpack. The falls were roaring but the trail was way less crowded. I agree though, most Gorge trails are better on weekdays and/or rainy days as those thin the crowds significantly....
