How do you pronounce Tygh??

Hiked the School Canyon-Tygh Creek loop this weekend, and realized that I am unsure how to pronounce the word Tygh.

Would it rhyme with "high" (like tie) or "fig" (like tig)??

I'm glad you didn't ask the 'right' way to pronounce it, because I don't know. I choose to pronounce it so it rhymes with 'high'.

This says it rhymes with "high," and while the "gh" is no longer pronounced, it's there because there was some sort of /x/ sound on the end of the word (táyx) in the original native language:

(/x/, phonetically, is a velar fricative, similar to the "ch" in German "Buch" or the "j" in some Spanish dialects.)

And I spoke to somebody who lives in Wamic once who pronounced it like "tie".

I grew up in Dufur and pronounced it like tie and I grew up hunting on Tygh Ridge.
