They say that all the snow at Timberline Lodge will be gone by Friday, so I expect that except for some sheltered north-facing spots, your trails will be clear. At least then. It could snow down to pass level again this weekend.

In checking out the various webcams this morning, I think you are right. Almost all the snow has melted around Hoodoo, and lots of snow has melted up at Rainier.

However, more snow predicted for Saturday & Sunday like you said :(

Actually the forecast for the weekend has been improving quite a bit. Saturday looks sunny and cold. But there could be snow Friday night/Sat morning - you know how it often gets cold enough to snow just as it dries out. Then snow levels heading back up on Sunday. So the weekend is looking promising at the moment. Let's see what the forecast says on Friday.

You are right DRM, it has been improving slightly.

5800 foot level on the SW side of Jefferson according to NOAA this morning...

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Saturday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30.

Sunday: A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 37.

So I stuck with my plan that has been in the works for months...

Saturday I hiked to the summit of Grizzly Peak.
Sunday I hiked to Hunts Cove.

Rain, snow, sleet, hail
No sun
No views
0 people
I had a blast :D

Snow level was about 4600 feet this past weekend.
About 1-2" at Hunts Cove & Grizzly Peak

Hanks Lake was 100% frozen over
Hunts Lake was not frozen over at all

Q, you have TR upcoming? Would like to maybe do this hike this weekend. I've only ever been on the PCT in this area and would like to explore a bit more. Thanks for any info.

Hi Surridge,

No, I wasn't planning on writing up a TR.
Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever written up a TR haha :?

I am happy to answer any questions that you might have though (if I can).

Temps overnight? Is Grizzly Peak a part of the traditional loop you can search for here or is it a side trail? Worth the climb/extra miles? How is the trailhead access road? And is permit season over? Thanks a bunch

I slept in my truck at the TH and basecamped from there.
Temps at night were probably around 40. The TH is at 3100 feet in elevation.

The hike up Grizzly Peak is an out and back hike.
No loop option exists from the summit.
The hike up is great, and on a nice day, the views are outstanding.
Certainly worth the extra miles in my opinion.

The road to the trailhead is excellent.
Paved for about 2 miles, then excellent gravel for about 1.5 miles.
No potholes, no washboards, no issues.

Permit season is now over.
The limited use permit season is from Memorial Day through Halloween.

If the rain this week is snow in the mountains, it might be very snowy this coming weekend.
Winter at elevation is upon us.
