Cold Water Lake -Hummocks TH access? Road 504

Post by pdxhikerguy263 » December 11th, 2014, 8:46 am

Has anyone been over to Cold Water Lake or the Hummocks Trail TH? I would assume there is little to no snow at that elevation right now but would like any current observations before I decide to head up there this weekend?

Thanks!

Haven't been there, but saw a press release yesterday saying they'd closed the gate at the Hummocks TH for the winter, due to mudslides just up the road a bit past there.

Road to the lake is normally open and plowed all winter (& closed right after Hummocks trailhead, as now). Down at Coldwater and Hummocks I've never seen more than a few inches of snow. Several miles before the lake there's a pass on SR 504 at 3700 feet, it may get a bit treacherous right after heavy snowfall - should be good this weekend.

The Johnston Ridge webcam yesterday showed an almost bare Pumice Plains.
You should be good to go for sure.

Like Romann stated, they plow the road to the Hummocks TH all winter long :P

one winter the road was obviously plowed all the way to JRO. We did a snowshoe/hike in Early January even... I have to wonder how that happened/why??

I was there yesterday. There is no snow whatsoever on the road (the snow line is a couple of thousand feet higher, high on Coldwater Ridge). The gate is closed now, but you can park at Hummocks and walk in to the S. Coldwater TH.
