Hells Canyon - Thanksgiving Weekend

Post by tambli22 » October 30th, 2014, 10:57 am

It sounds like Hells Canyon is a great early season hike, but does anybody know what it's like in late fall? I'm considering a 3 day backpacking trip there over Thanksgiving weekend. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Many of the trialheads may be inaccessibly snowy or too muddy given the recent spate of precip. But if we get a dry period before TG, they may shape up. So I think you need to monitor as it gets closer. I think some intrepid hunters do go in the Fall, so it is possible.

Several years ago I did an overnight in Hells Canyon on Thanksgiving weekend. Details here: http://www.jessb.org/hells-canyon-overnight-adventure/

Start at a low elevation trailhead and be prepared for any kind of weather. I remember driving out there in a nasty snowstorm on highway 84. But it's do-able if you're used to camping in the fall in the northwest!
Will break trail for beer.
