Well, I did it, and here are my findings:

• It's very easy to get from the Rock Lake area to the PCT on the west flank of East Crater. We were able to follow "former" trails until the end of the meadows, then it was only a short easy bushwhack up to the real trail.

• It's not too difficult to get to the top of East Crater from the west side. Just keep going up.

• It totally SUCKS to go down the south side of East Crater! At first, it was really steep, and then it was just a long slog through a semi-open fir/hemlock forest that was lousy with beargrass and huckleberries; sometimes the huckleberries were chest-high. And all the brush was covered in dew/fog/clouds, so we came out soaking wet.

So, overall, I'd say that if you want to climb East Crater, go for it... but it's probably best to both ascend AND descend the west side.
