Mt Hebo 5/10

Post by pdxgene » May 10th, 2011, 7:00 pm

Well the plan was to climb up thru the forest, hope for crystal clear blue skies to see the Cascades volcanoes and have a leisurely lunch in the mountaintop meadow. Oh well....
It started off pretty normal, the mosses in the forest down there are pretty nice..

At about the three mile mark where you have completed the steepest part of the hike and cross the road for the final mile to the meadow we came upon our old friend..

Since the trail wraps around the north and shady side of the mountain for that last climb we didn't even bother. We've seen it before, it wasn't as clear as we needed for the Cascades view so it just wasn't worth it to slog thru soft slushy snow. We went up the road for a bit but it was soon blocked off too and all vehicles had turned back. So we headed on back down with more time to shoot some of the moss and foresty scenes..

Some of the fallen trees provided some nice color..

Not every color was green though..

But there was no shortage of the thick mossy green ones..

Hebo Lake, the beginning and end of the journey..

And with some extra time to kill, a side trip to the Pelican Bay brewpub for snackees and adult beverages and a closing look at Haystack Rock at Cape Kiwanda..

Looks like it's gonna be a while for the wildflower meadows. D'Oh! And though any number of things went wrong it was still ended up a great day of wandering the woods and sands.

Thanks, Gene. I really like that second shot -- and I think I've seen photos of that spot posted before (maybe by you?) How far up the trail is that?

Thanx! The mossy sections are along the first (lower) part of the trail not far from the trailhead. Probably within the first half mile to mile and a half or so.

I really like your lake photo, and the mossy trees! They remind me of hairy monsters on Scooby Doo! LOL!!!!

I always enjoy your trips to the coast you post. I love those kinds of trips taking a moderate hike and finish your day on the beach.
