2010 Hiking Summaries

Post by weathercrazy » December 23rd, 2010, 8:52 pm

It's that time again! Let's have your:

1) Total # of hikes (generally more than 1 mile (not just around the block)
2) Total mileage
3) Total elevation gain
4) Best hike (and date)...why?
5) Best picture? (not necessarily from your best hike)

Here is mine (might squeeze one more in before the end of the year

1) 19
2) 120.2
3) 27,230
4) Devil's Rest (12.21.10), beautiful snow cover, hardly any wind, and quiet!

5)

Looks like I'm probably done for the year, unless a really nice day comes along.

1. 29 hikes
2. 132.4 miles
3. 18,400
4. Silver Star Mountain via Ed's Trail on the Friday before Labor Day I think, also bagged Sturgeon Rock that day.
5. From Silver Star summit, it was perfectly clear in every direction but west on this day. Not the best "photography", but I dug this hike especially because Vancouver and Portland were totally covered while we could see all the visible peaks (including Jefferson).

I got an extremely late start this year - I injured my already-messed up knee in January, and had surgery in June. I was able to start hiking again (after surgery) in October. Which partially explains my numbers...

1) Total # of hikes: 5

2) Total mileage: 38.92

3) Total elevation gain: 6000

4) Best hike (and date): Hamilton Mountain Loop, 11/04/10 (longest hike I'd done in many years. felt great!)

5) Best picture? - from my first hike, post-surgery - Cape Falcon. Hard to put into words the feeling I had when I arrived at the cape, and realized that I was going to be getting back on the trail again on a regular basis! Woohoo!

Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…

Hiking took second place to climbing for the first part of the year. But, stats are not shabby, considering I broke my foot halfway into the year... And I'll likely sneak a couple more in next week around here or in Central Oregon. Anyone have days off next week :)?

1. 25 trips including several multi-day trips
2. 193 miles
3. 50,000+ feet
4. Favorite trip was the long road trip on my robo-crutch

1) Total # hikes: 65

2) Total mileage: 746 (less climbing = more miles)

3) Total elevation: 187,845’ (more Gorge = more gain)

4) Best hike: Trans-Gorge in June/July. Got a feel for the Gorge and MOH wilderness area as an inter-connected whole rather than just a trail here and there. Also great weather, great views, and no crowds.

5) Best picture: I don’t know about “best” relative to the great work by others, but here are my favorites (for different reasons) from 2010 (and I know I’m trying people’s patience here):

Tanner Butte & Mt. Hood (OR)

Mt. St. Helens (WA)

Mt. Oberlin (Glacier NP, MT)

I'm envying those of you with so many trips. Maybe someday when I don't have this lousy job... :)

4 trips
158 miles
32,250 ft gain
Favorite trip: Lake Bagging in the Seven Devils (a lot of fun pursuing a goal)
Best (call it favorite) picture: Chiwawa Mtn & flanks of Red Mtn over Lyman Lakes area, shot from below Cloudy Pass

Ah, yes, the Cloudy Pass wildflower gardens! I did the Spider Meadow/Lyman Lakes/Cloudy Pass/Image Lake/Buck Creek Pass loop (with a side trip to Canyon Lake) back in 1987. I want to go back!

I am really bad about keeping info on my hikes but I did meet Mayhem , Stevefromdodge Mica and Roman this year on the trail . Was in the same area as CFM a couple of times. .

Went every week at least once except for an illness in Nov.

Did a couple of new hikes in southern Oregon I really enjoyed and lucked out with mild temps without the heat that can occur down there.

Did Silver Star at least fifteen times from grouse vista that is my 24 hr fitness..

But my favorite trip was a a ski trip up and down from Marble Mt to MSH rim in March after a dry warm Feb had a great time with a lot of new fresh dry snow.

And went to Cold water peak and Mt Margaret for the first time and really enjoyed those trips.

No numbers though, Tom

Since my wife's big family was coming over tonight my son and I went to Bells Mt and got some snow for a snowman for the little ones.
