Bonanza Trail 4/25/10

Post by cfm » April 28th, 2010, 4:43 am

Early Sunday morning. My plan was to hike up to Boulder Ridge from the Wildwood Area off highway 26 near Welches. I arrived at 6:45 and the gate was closed. All of the outside parking spots were roped off and no-parking signs up along the road. I got a coffee, went to the grocery store and got back at 7:15 and the gate was still closed, so I decided to try the nearby Bonanza Trail which is described by Sullivan in the Wildwood entry.

I just went to the Bonanza Mine and back. The first two miles are along Cheeney Creek. Very charming riverside trail through alder forest.

I spent a lot of time at this swimming hole observing an ouzel family bring morsels to their nest in a mossy boulder in the creek.

Nice

You could always park at Mt Hood RV, or the old Mount Hood info center that is now closed, and walk over. You have to go to the far end of the campground, and then walk straight over on a trail to the Boulder Ridge trailhead. It adds about a mile though.

I love that trail, Jen -- Cheeny Creek is very nice! But mine shafts creep me out.... ghosts, ogres, spectres, clanking old rusty stuff... you name it, you'll find it there... :?
