I set off yesterday with my older son to for an afternoon hike. We wanted some place quiet so that the dog could run, so I picked Three Corners Rock and headed over to Washington. We left Portland just before lunchtime and by the time we were crossing the bridge over Dougan Falls, my son was hungry, so we stopped for lunch at the falls. I am glad we did, because I have driven by them several times but never really looked at them. Although they aren't impressively tall, they are wide and beautiful. As we sat for lunch, butterflies stopped for a drink nearby. Butterflies aren't the most cooperative subjects, but I did manage to get one picture. My son unsuccessfully tried to sneak up on them to get a closer look.
After lunch we continued our drive to the intersection of the PCT. The drive was bumpy and rocky, but surprisingly few potholes. I still wouldn't have wanted to drive there in my Honda Civic though. At the trailhead there was one other car. They were leaving just as we were hiking up, so we didn't see another soul until we were almost at the top and an ATVer complete with guns and camo came up from a logging trail. He was friendly and gone as quickly as he had come though, so we when we climbed to the top of the rock we had the place to ourselves. As we hiked back down towards the car, my least favorite friends the alpine mosquitoes, were starting to make an appearance. I told them they were a bit early, but they didn't let that stop them from biting me a few times.
There was a lot more snow than I had expected. Easily navigated, but it slowed down our progress a bit and my son had wet feet by the time we got back to the car. Both dog and boy enjoyed the hike and the warm weather. The clouds were rolling in just as we were driving back up the forest road.

Nice flutterby capture! And this must be the Year of the Smiling Dog Pics. The fifth photo down looked so much like the Devil's Head area of the Colorado foothills, I almost did a double take. I used to go there regularly to climb a rocky spot du jour and meditate on the open landscape and surrounding hills as the sun baked my T-shirt dry. My meditation companions were little black rock spiders and scrappy lizards and, I swear, the rock had it's own musty, metallic perfume. Thanks for the sweet memories!

It is in the Yacolt Burn State Forest. Here is a map: http://www.dnr.wa.gov/Publications/eng_ ... l_vert.pdf There is a fair amount of target shooting and ATV use in that area, so that may be why many folks don't go there. The hike was pleasant and I've heard there are nice flowers later in the spring. (May/June)Stefrobrts wrote:Looks like you guys had fun! Where is this at? I couldn't find it in the field guide.

Great report and beautiful pics! Here is a link that has directions, I hope works properly. It is featured in Lorain's "Afoot & Afield".ElphabaNorthWest wrote:It is in the Yacolt Burn State Forest.
