Bayocean Spit - 3/14

Post by awildman » March 15th, 2010, 3:08 pm

Traveled west looking for sunshine yesterday, only to find grey skies and a beautiful stormy ocean. I had never done the whole walk around Bayocean Spit so it was nice to explore somewhere new. There was a lot of flotsam on the beach and many dead animals (birds, beaver, deer, sea lions) in various states of decay that the dogs joyfully rolled in throughout the walk. We also hit Oceanside on the way back to make a trip through the tunnel to check out the sea stacks to the north. A nice, mellow outing for all but not enough wind for the stunt kite.

Thanks for the report, Allison! It reminds me that I haven't been to Bayocean for a long time! Since my son and his wife bought the "surf shack" in Westport, WA, that's where most of my beach trips have been. Bayocean is usually far more isolated, and in general the OR coast is more spectacular than the very flat gray sand in the Grays Harbor area. I'm going to have to schedule a trip over there--maybe an overnighter!

I suspect that last night was doggie bath night?

Looks like you all had one of those ever coveted "beach to ourselves" days. Congratulations. I go to the coast quite often, but haven't been to Bayocean in a while. I'll have to check it out again. Thanks for the report!

Thanks, Aridd! That's a classic Chelsea pose. Especially now that she's 11!

Goaties! Did you get close enough to pet them? If you think dogs can get stinky, you haven't patted a goat lately. Ha, ha! Bayocean has always looked tempting, I'll have to add it this summer on some low-key weekday when it's nothing but me and the goats....

Love the poocher shots. They are very photogenic and they probably know it.

Nice photos, Allison, and it appears the dogs are doing well but wondering how they kept from chasing the goats?? Oscar looks very trim and ready for the long walks

Especially liked the photo with the orange float in the foreground and then the folks plus the view in the background, nice! I've never done that walk but it's now on my long list.

Boots, they were like little goat-dogs. So friendly and utterly perplexed by the other four-legged beasts barking at them through the fence. As soon as our dogs were removed, they came right over for a head scritch (with gloves). I think they are there as a test; the spit is covered in Scotch Broom and it appears that they've been put on invasive plant patrol. Their pen was pretty nude.

Skip, the goats were in a fenced pen. They didn't really seem too phased by the dogs who, admittedly, thought they were large, hoofed cats. They just stared at the dogs with their baleful goat eyes.

I wanna go pet the goaties now! That may have to be Saturday's hike.
