Red Shorts followed Bobcat up Primrose Path

The right tracks have a different number of toe prints--5 toes on right rear paw? (Edit: yes, this is a known mutation common in cats, a polydactyl cat!)
Bobcat tracks a.jpg
Bobcats are direct register, which means they step in their own footprints. So only hind footprints are visible.
(Edit- The right tracks all had 5 toe prints, the left had 4 toe prints, over 1000 feet in fresh snow of alternating tracks of 4 (left) and then 5 (right) toe prints)

Eventually the Bobcat left the trail and went down the steep slope to the east.
The snow got much deeper as Red Shorts went up, so he started making a wider base than just his bootprints, gathering and packing snow platforms (steps) when needed in anticipation of much more snow to come. The base he built could last all season if enough snow falls!

The junction at the tree on boulder. Of note is the trail goes east below the tree and switches back. The trail goes also east above the tree and continues on to the bluff. The arrow to the right shows the way to Devil's Slide, which is good for glissading down. Devil's Slide is not anticipated to be maintained during the summer, so may be overgrown by next winter.

The trail drops briefly down and around the red volcanic rock cliff. Be careful not to get buried by fresh snow sloughing off.

The bluff trees before snowfall, were trees planted in a smooth curve?

Red Shorts finally finished cutting this tree on S?Y Devil connector before snowpack made it hard to duck under.

The following picture was taken on New Years eve from the new "view" switchback on lower Primrose Path and shows fog layers which traveled in opposite directions! This was todays group cover photo on Portland Hikers.
Red Shorts wishes to thank everyone for all their support!

That's cool, I have seen bobcat tracks in that area as well. I like seeing those on a hike! Cougar tracks on the other hand, no thanks...

Very pretty. Nice to see some shots of the new snow in the Gorge.

I don't think that's a polydactyl cat. The snow is pockmarked with drip holes, and I think that's what caused your "extra toe." Bobcats also commonly overstep (hind foot in front of forefoot) and also (occasionally, I think) understep.

Get out the popcorn folks, there's gonna be a catfight!
Just kidding!
Red Shorts invokes Occam's razor as he is certainly no expert on Bobcats.
However, he did have the opportunity of looking at 100's of tracks that day,
and many were not in areas of tree drip.
At first, he though there was some thing wrong with the hind leg, maybe an injury had the cat stepping cockeyed on the right hind foot?
But then he compared the pad (hand) prints, they were identical from left to right prints , a semi circle in front with 3 lobes to the back.
Red Shorts also posted on Facebook Oregon Hikers and Climbers group (private group) which is a great group btw.
A top contributor noted that even large cats are prone to polydactylism, so mystery solved if Occam's razor is applied. Red Shorts never even heard of cats with extra toes until then. He looks forward to seeing if this particular cat will bless him with more tracks in the future!
Well Jim, where to next?

Thanks Bobcat!
A glutton for punishment, Red Shorts ventured forth again yesterday (Wed, 1-10-24) after the big storm Tuesday.
As happens often, he was a first responder and cleared tons of rocks, branches, logs, etc..
Waters were above flood levels so part of Wakeena creek was flowing down trail below second bridge.
The bridge had a lot of melting slush present.
Fairy Falls footbridge also was just barely underwater.
The snow on the ground started in earnest at Wahkeena Springs.
W springs 11024.jpg
He had been cleaning up many messes already but the snow made it much more difficult.
Stuff down 11024.jpg
The freezing level was reached at the bottom of Primrose Path. Red Shorts was pretty wet by then and almost turned around. He put on waterproof mittons and glove liners, and a heat pack, underneath, as his work gloves were completely soaked! He tentatively proceded up Primrose Path. Soon his frozen fingers thawed.
The view from the new switchback:

Zooming in, one can see the snow covered Vista trail, which is still closed, as only a half foot wide trail goes above the landslide (Fairy Falls area). Foolish hikers did inform days ago that the trail is otherwise completely passable otherwise. Red Shorts just shook his head and kept silent!
Vista trail 11024.jpg
The snow had let up but still heavy clouds overhead, did not need tinted googles or sunglasses.
Brief let up 11024.jpg
He continued clearing stuff and packing the snow down to renew the trail.
Suddenly the trail disappeared entirely!
New big mess 11024.jpg
It took some figuring out, Red Shorts knows this trail like the back of his hand, so it was quite befuddling until he figured out that a huge tree had fallened and was already buried by snow. He cleared a path through the mess and began putting in some flags.
Facing the bluff:

He soon came to the tree on boulder at the jucntion with Devil's Slide and decided to wrap it with flag tape.

There was 4 to 5 foot snowdrifts on the north face by now as Devil's Rest mostly sheltered Red Shorts from the wind, but as the lee side, this is where much of the blown snow ends up. Often the top has MUCH less snow, along with the routes on the south side. Wind plaster snow on trees showing the SW direction of wind.

Approching the bluff:

At least one person with a dog had come down from the top and could not find trails so went back up.
Red Shorts apologizes and has placed more flagging in this area, as many flags have been snow covered or actually buried in snow. Signs on logs were uncovered, but will be buried soon.

The previously cut log:

It was joyful retracing the path down. Keep to the inside, as if one steps too far to edge, the not yet fully compacted snow will give way!
Adding to the enjoyment, a touch of blue sky!
Blue sky 11024.jpg
On the lower trail, it was beginning to get dark so Red Shorts placed a flag at this, soon to be at eye level, poke instead of attempting to saw it from up above on the bank of snow. It started a downpour of rain soon after he got to the car. He never did need microspikes. It will probably well after the coming big freeze before he finds it safe enough to return...

1-12-2024 Red Shorts dashed up Red Shorts Cut Route to top of Devil's Rest.
Power keeps going out, so story keeps getting lost, so maybe just look at the pictures!
(Gonna try a few edits to give some information about pictures. Above freezing and blue sky, dead calm almost entire day. He decided to park at Angel's Rest trailhead in case the weather and roads became bad sooner than expected)

Young adult cougar tracks partially filled with fresh. Followed this cat for well over a mile before it left the trail.

Looking back at Red Shorts tracks in deeper snow. Snowshoes would be useful at this point.

Rabbit tracks:

Too little flagging and too few tree markers (people had removed most of them over the summer) made the trail hard to follow at times. This was a welcome sign to sight!:

Red Shorts was the first, and, he thought, probably only person to summit!

He noticed new fog at river level, slowly drifting from the east. Checked later and the temperature at this time period, at river level, dropped 6 degrees in less than 20 minutes to below freezing. He was suprised to run into another bold hiker coming up the trail, on snowshoes, which turned out to be Arlohike! After a pleasent conversation the hikers parted.

Red Shorts again started heading down, but stopped at times to take on some trimming and cutting of snow covered, low hanging, branches and vine maple bowers. This bower in the picture was bent way over until it violently sprung upwards when cut.

He did more cutting farther down and exposed a nice view of blue sky.

Temperatures were dropping fast at this point and the wind was now evident. Red Shorts put on all the clothes he had, heading down ASAP, and so his fingers had thawed enough to taking this picture of Phoca Rock with whitecaps on the river.

Nice to have a thermometer on the bulletin board at trailhead.

A lucky day to remember!
