you could bring an air pump and one of those cans of stuff that fix some flats

sorry to hear. As one other point of reference aside from costing the manufacturer less, the ubiquity of cell phones+coverage (and majority of drivers not being in remote/cell free areas), is the MPG tests.

The weight of a full size spare, jack, etc is absolutely enough to affect MPG by .5 or .25 over a tank of gas. The donut spare and jack as well, if they are able to add .3mpg to 5 different vehicles across 20 model variations, I think it helps their CAFE standards (could be wrong though, not an expert on this).

It's not just fancy cars, my 2023 corolla hybrid also does not have a spare and this is becoming more common in general. I think I will be ordering a donut or a full size spare for the vehicle to throw in the back just for peace of mind if I'm going anywhere other than within 50 miles of home/onto any legit back roads.
