Spent a couple of days around Mt Hood hiking a few trails I've never hiked before and picked Catalpa Lake. After reading the Field Guide description via Bonnie Meadows, I opted to start the hike at Barlow Creek camp to avoid a ford of White River, given temperatures in the low 40's. I accessed the trail using FR 4300-220, thinking it might be better than Barlow Road. It was narrow and rocky with overhanging tree limbs, but relatively flat and fine with 2WD.
The hike up to the lake was pleasant, not too steep, and in good condition. The lake was lovely, with Larch trees dotting the shore.
Back to my vehicle, I rock-hopped across the creek rather than use the decaying bridge, to check out White River.
Didn't see a way to rock-hop across White River, so headed back to my vehicle to conclude the hike.
6 miles RT, ~1050' elevation gain
Very nice short hike.
