Love those one-year comparisons, Guy - you should send those to Mark Nelson at Fox 12! Though that would squander some of your 15 minutes of fame if he puts them on the air...

Thanks for posting - great report!

Tom :)

Cheers Craig & Tom.

Those pics are why I haven't quite given up on winter snow yet. Last year it didn't really start snowing & ski Bowl didn't open until the Last Weekend in January but we ended up with a near normal snow pack on Hood. Things better change soon though!

I drove the road that goes by Cooper Spur a couple of days ago (1/27) just for reconnaissance on the way to the Dog River TH and it is snow free all the way.

Thanks for the info. I plan on going up there this weekend but my car doesn't handle well the snow !

I was thinking of going to Cooper Spur on Sat. I have little experience hiking in the snow. Obviously you didn't need your snowshoes as there was no fresh snow, but are micro spikes necessary?

I plan on taking my microspikes and snowshoes on the back of my pack since I plan on going farther than the cooper spur shelter. But it looks like I will be using my hiking boots mainly

I'll probably see you tomorrow then !!

Fred & Shub,

You wont need snow shoes, you will travel faster if you have microspikes or equivalent. On the lower Tilly Jane trail & on the lower section of the trail from the A Frame up through the trees there are many sections where the snow has melted & thawed many times turning into ice. You can get around these without spikes but you will travel much easier if you have them. If you don't have spikes I would take the Polallie Ridge route no ice on the ridge & better views!

The road is free of snow but the parking lot was a sheet of ice, that was were we needed our microspikes the most :)..

Enjoy, it's going to be great up there on Saturday, Sunday not so much!
