Did Beacon Rock yesterday with my girlfriend and two kids (5 and 7). It's very easy, relaxing, and great views throughout. Very crowded and quite the tourist destination (not quite Multnomah Falls but in the same vein with regards to how crowded it is). The page for it says "No Fees" but it should probably be noted that you need a parking pass ($10 for a day, $30 for the year) and I saw several people with no passes getting tickets.
Anyway, I took this photo of the rock itself:
Here is a photo of some of the switchbacks going up the side of the rock:

One of the many captivating views:

Beacon Rock was the first hike I did with my son when we moved to Portland. Your picture of the switchbacks is a classic.

greetings from over the river and [not so] far away...
you make the crowds and parking shenanigans seem inviting

Yeah - Beacon Rock in a sense is less of a "hike" and more of a tourist experience (all it needs is an elevator). But, I still appreciated it for what it was. I tend to enjoy hikes that are off the beaten path but it's fun to just blatantly be a tourist every once in a while and I had never been so I'm glad I checked it out. Even my 7 year old said "dad, we're kind of tourists aren't we?". He sounded kind of embarrassed.

remember in summer a chipmunk who demanded part of everyone's snack on summit and was not afraid of any dog...if you do not want to be tourist some very demanding rock climbs on the north side.... was first adopted by state of Oregon..to save it from being quarried....was named by Lewis and Clark Expedition who camped there
