Meet-n-Deet Swag: A Trip Report Repeat

Post by rainrunner » December 15th, 2014, 10:49 am

Yes, Marcus Mariota may have won the Heisman, but we held the winning ticket to the wee little, but utterly cute, troll hiking buddy. Swag accompanied us to our favorite snow destination (same place we always go) on the flanks of Mt. Hood. We were on the trail by 11pm with headlamps and arrived after midnight ~~ just in time for the moon rise. We hiked up the White River Trail to the overlook and then followed the Timberline Trail. With only one inch of snow at White River and three or so inches at the overlook, snow shoes were not required. We did don our micro-spikes for our climb up the ridge. Between perfect weather and a partial moon, the skies aligned for night photography.

Swag will be a welcome addition on our hikes this year.

With only a couple of inches of snow, we were still able to follow the Timberline Trail up the ridge instead of the ravine.

My plan for the lit Christmas tree fell apart when the lights overpowered the scene, but I think I could have either waited until the moon was straight overhead or used LED pin lights instead of the ones with a cover which diffused the light.

I had to take the Christmas Tree picture in the morning.

It was fantastic meeting you both Saturday night and I am quite envious of your new little hiking buddy. Great photos! Glad there was enough snow out there for your photos. I really like that last shot, it's beautiful!

That last shot is something else. It was great meeting you in person at the Meet'n'Deet and it's mighty impressive that you went hiking afterwards. Pretty hardcore!
Thanks,
Mike J

Great TR, I just love the night pictures. You must be the first to hike immediately AFTER the Meet n' Deet!

Great seeing you on Saturday night -- and I'm so impressed that you went up to the mountain afterward..! So, was there also a cardboard box with leftover pizza (for breakfast) packed with that tree..?? ;)

I meant to get some tips on night exposures from you -- love these shots! I've never taken a decent night shot (nor a decent sunset). Love your spot on Boy Scout Ridge, too -- that's a really pretty scene, and surprisingly remote-feeling, despite the proximity to the resorts.

Thanks for posting!

Tom :)
