The deep pit on Burnt Granite is the only one I've seen like these. In this trip report, I link to an account by one individual (who had never hiked anywhere in Oregon before) that saw a family of sasquatch creating it!
The weird white dripping fungus that shows itself around this time of year on dead conifers is Hericium abietis.

I thought about it, Cheryl! But the leaves are pretty much off those vine maples already... and Mt. Hood was being shy at about that time, too... next year!
