Hogs back - MT Hood Monday 10/6

Post by artic » October 7th, 2014, 6:25 pm

Wanted to get up high on Mt Hood before the winter snows start accumulating
Hogs back looks like a long climb- about 10300 over 4000 eg
IMGP6577.JPG
Clear day- Jefferson, Sisters
IMGP6579.JPG
White river glacier
IMGP6580.JPG
Snow field- put on the micro spikes and continued up, coming down was fun shoe skiing
IMGP6589.JPG
Illumination rock
IMGP6591.JPG
After 3.5 hrs of climbing the hogs back is close- snow on upper left
IMGP6595.JPG
Top of the white river glacier and Timberline way below

Last year when I was up here this tarn was ice free, surprised to find it frozen up

Yep Mt Hood is still active
IMGP6605.JPG
Hogs back extension to the right- to the left I saw a solo climber coming down. I saw a rock fly by him no more than 10 feet away and the size of a softball. When I talked to him he said the rock fall was continuous and one even hit the brim of his hat.

View out from just below the hogs back, kind of steep up here

After about an hour up high it was time to head back down- 2hrs to the parking lot

Perfect weather, perfect day

Great photos!

The little tarn was frozen over when we were up there on a warm day last month too. We were thinking its probably because of the amount of ice that extends into the water keeping the temperature down.
