Sorry about your loss. I can relate as well. I lost my dad over 4 years ago now and still miss him. Some of his ashes were scattered at a special spot I like. He liked the woods and supported my hiking and loved looking at my trail reports too. I think hiking is a great way to start the healing process.
Just to add a bit - a recent quote I saw resonated with me - "my favorite hike is always my next one".

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: WOW! What a ride! - Hunter S. Thompson

Nice tribute and report.

Great job Sean and thanks for the thoughtful tribute to read. I just did that loop in 4 days a couple weeks ago and it was incredible. (We added Chambers Lakes and a summit of South Sister which I recommend for your next trip)
Thanks for your inspiration on these looney hikes as I may try one around St Helens this Friday.
Great words, the wilderness certainly helps us deal with these difficult times.

Great TR Sean - How overwhelming to lose two people close to you within a few days. I feel for you.
Joie - CONGRATULATIONS on completing that hike! You are one tough cookie.

Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…

Thanks for the kind words and thoughtfulness everyone At first I wasnt sure how much I "should" or shouldn't share on an open internet forum. But considering how many people I've come to know personally here(thanks PH) and for the many more I hope to meet or share a trail with someday, it felt good to put some of the feelings I was experiencing in writing.

And repacking that grimy tent and ground cloth after it poured the first night on the trail! And realizing on Day 2 that you forgot to pack at extra socks! And the quality time digging cat holes behind discreet trees... only to find you weren't the first to discover that spot! Ah, the infinite joys of backpacking..!One day to do the entire loop???? What a waste of a good several days of backpacking (says someone who couldn't possibly do that - you guys are amazing)
Thanks for posting, Sean!

Too true! although I love backpacking Unfortunately I think I get the well-cured roadkill thing going overnighter or not

— from John of the Mountains (1938)Life seems neither long nor short, and we take no more heed to save time or make haste than do the trees and stars. This is true freedom, a good practical sort of immortality.
