Mt St Helens summit - Jul-05-2014

Post by CraigG » July 6th, 2014, 4:40 pm

Greetings All -

Our group of seven had purchased climbing permits a while back to hike/scramble Mt St Helens. We had to forgo any July-4 (over)celebrations, but we all agreed it was well worth it in the end!
There was no snow on the summer route. Crampons not needed. Microspikes not needed. If you wished to ascend the snowfield climber's right of the summer route, then microspikes/ice axe were a good idea.

Our group of 7 headed off bright and early from Climber's Bivouac TH:

First stop at the tree line:

Up, up, up - follow those poles!

The clouds had cleared - we were going to get a great view at the summit!

A view to the south:

Note the lack of snow on the last section before the top:

At the crater rim:

Must go over to the true summit - that way! The wind was blowing about 25-30mph at the rim:

Some crater shots on the way over to the summit - I think I see Karl over there??? Maybe a bit to the left?

Note to self - don't trip:

Adams still had its July 4th party hat on - maybe it was sleeping in for the day:

We had a fantastic time glissading down (frozen butts were worth it!):

Further down:

It seems marmot ( Edit: actually chipmunk  ) modelling had made its way to the south side of St Helens - note the little guy on the rock plying his trade:

Our fearless leader Barbara returned victorious!

It was a fun, fantastic day!

I just cannot believe how little snow there is up there! We went through considerably more last October.

Hey, I think I got a shot of you, too!

That is so awesome you guys had a perfect weather day when you had to get your permits so far in advance.

And of course despite climbing with you and Barb yesterday, Sam led the way all day on the little 16 mile / 5000 ft loop he did with me today :-)

Nice trip, and a great day for it. Thanks for sharing.
Having wandered around St Helens the day before, I sure would have liked to go up it.
I'll add it to the list!

Thanks! BTW - I edited my report to correctly identify the "modeler". Shows how much I know 'bout the outdoors.

There's no stopping Sam. I have only slowed him down a little bit by having him break trail in 2.5 feet of snow during a snowstorm for about 5 miles (human snowplow). It got him down to 3.0mph going uphill. ;) It's all good. Sounds like a great loop payslee!
We shall see what happens with Sam on the TT360. Probably nothing and he will hike the next day. :D

This is a great time to go climb. A lot of fun to go up the snowfield right now. You may be able to get permit from the St Helens permit trade site. It was pretty easy, as that is how I got mine. There was a ranger at the Loowit/Ptarmigan Trail intersection checking for climbing permits on Saturday.
