Crescent Mountain -Beargrass bonanza 7/6/14

Post by derwoodynck » July 6th, 2014, 4:29 pm

We hiked up Crescent Mountain along Highway 20 on the way home from Bend (we did Iron Mountain on the 4th on the way over). The views and wildflowers were great on both hikes but for you beargrass lovers Crescent Mountain was a jackpot.

Whoa!

That's more beargrass than I saw anywhere last year, which was supposedly a bumper crop!

I heard that Coffin Mountain, which is a little north of Crescent, is also having a beargrass bonanza this year. Didn't make it up there this weekend due to lack of time and the heat.

That's awesome! I didn't know beargrass may be not "in sync" in different places.

Been to Silver Star Mt. a week ago (a place where beargrass bloom is usually great) and saw almost none - assumed it's true for other areas.

I hiked Coffin last year, and the beargrass was splendid as well!

Without a doubt, Crescent Mountain has the most awesome display of beargrass that I've ever seen, hands down. I hit it in its peak a few years ago, really amazing to see.

Wow, what a crop! According to Wikipedia, it thrives with periodic burns, so I wonder what the fire history of that area is.
