Valley of the Giants 3/28

Post by pdxgene » March 28th, 2013, 6:03 pm

Come on along with three bartenders working off about 5 hours sleep after a late tv Blazer game last night as we head into the Coast Range and the middle of nowhere, get there, and then take a left and keep on going.. Seriously, if you go here, call the BLM for road closures and detailed instructions. And then prepare to get lost anyway. Add in very agressive log truck drivers on a fairly narrow road and like the brochure says, "the drive is the adventure". We did "find" a new way out that seemed straighter and involved less time on unpaved roads. It's not in any info I've seen on the place at all and this isn't the possible back way from near Drift Creek Falls. This brought us out near Fort Hoskins Historic Park by Kings Valley, totally avoiding Valsetz/Falls City and hitting Highway 223 about 15 miles south of Falls City. We knew at some point we were on the 'wrong' road but decided to follow it and see what happened. Go figure.. it actually worked
Going on a weekend should eliminate the log truck issues. A lot of the road goes thru private property and gated roads. Once fire season starts, the gates/roads will be closed to the public.
Photo descriptions here http://picasaweb.google.com/pdxgene/ValleyOfTheGiants1 It's hard for the photos to give the true perspective, especially with the clouds above but..moss, big trees, tons of nurse logs, lack of people and incredibly peaceful location.. Enjoy!

How could they possibly saw those logs? Stand out of the way when you cut through

Awesome choice guys. Big trees are hard to convey in photos. The highway south of Dallas out through Kings Valley and beyond has its own timeless feel to it too. I always enjoy the drive through there, and the many covered bridges and big barns. Thanks for taking us along!

Well done Gene!
Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…
