Trillium Lake Overnight Snow Shoe Backpack ~~ Dec. 29 - 30

Post by rainrunner » December 30th, 2012, 6:06 pm

This is our favorite overnight snow backpack mainly because the pavilion provides shelter for cooking and the views of Mt. Hood are outrageous when the sky is clear. By starting our hike around 2pm, we pass over 200 day users heading back, but usually have the entire lake to ourselves and the hike out in the morning is pretty quiet.

agreed!

Great idea for an easy overnight. If you don't mind me asking, where did you park?

This is awesome. I want to do this.

What was your sleeping equipment as far as clothing and bag/sleeping mat?

I'm trying to gauge if my REI Igneo + ExPed Downmat 7 UL + Thermolite Reactor Furnace will be sufficient for an overnight up there.

Brian: Thanks for the nice comment about the photo. The focus was troublesome, but I lucked out on a few of the shots. Here are the settings:
21mm - f/3.5 - 30 sec exposure - iso 200 - with the mirror locked up and the long exposure noise reduction set to strong.

Zee: We park at the Trillium Lake Snow Park on Hwy. 26. It is very crowded, but by the time we get there, people are leaving.

XRP: Sleeping needs depend on the temperatures and conditions. Last night was about 20 degrees. My wife used her REI Sub Kilo 15 degree bag with a Lafuma 45 degree bag as a liner, a 3/4 size thermarest over a closed cell pad. I use my REI Mohave 15 degree bag over a full size thermarest. We also use the $11 emergency blanket on the floor of the tent.

For clothing, we used a pair or two of running tights, sock liners, wool socks, three or four shirts each. The key is to be dry when you go to sleep.

Snow parkas took up a lot of room in our backpacks, but are necessary at camp. Over night, we put our cameras and cell phones in our sleeping bags.

CFM: Yes! But be forewarned that Boy Scout troops already know about this area.
The mountains are calling and I must go.

Awesome, you guys rock. Not only a beautiful way to spend a day and evening, the pictures seem to be the cherry on top. I can just imagine being there.

Snow camping is not for me, but that SUPER AWESOME night shot might convince me otherwise. Love it!
