I think it was Peder's idea to hike up to Munra and then over to Moffett, but he couldn't make the hike. So it started as Don, Guy, cascadehiker, and me at exit 40 at 6:00.
We headed up the Munra trail...
I'll post more photos later.
We topped out near the power lines that lead back to Moffett and the WWII house. Then we went east past von Ahn Rim, doing some light trail clean up along the way.
Soon we met up with Sean and JoJo! They joined us for a while to the top of the Moffett switchbacks.
Much later, after we crossed Tanner Creek, we met up with Romann. He'd been doing some trail maintenance of his own on the Tanner Creek trail. Check out the log he cut and we helped him roll off the trail.
We hiked the whole day and the only people we ran into were from PH! Not a single stranger out there in that part of the gorge today.

I'm sorry that I could not make it; sometimes work gets in the way!
It looks like you went straight up the outcrop on the Upper Munra Ridge. That must be the first shovel to go up that way on CH's back!
Thank you to everybody for all the trail work.

You guys are going to have those Moffett and Tanner creek trail parts looking like first class trails. Very much appreciated. I can't wait to get in there to check it out.

More info & photos later but here is a quick movie of the Munra Traverse for your enjoyment!
Movie (Click to watch):
This was a butt kicker of a hike! About 16.5 miles but combined with the trailwork we were out on the trail for 13 hours. Chase & Cascade Hiker longer as Don & I bailed on the trailword at around 4:15 & headed for home but we still had a 3 hour hike out. Good meeting you on the trail Romann you took care of some really big logs all on your own!

Chase, thanks for putting this trip together. The Munra ridge walk was a blast! Hiking with DN and Guy is always a great time. And glad that we met up with Romann and chatted it up on the way out on Rd 777. Don, those Heineken's were the perfect ending!

Great job guys! You did some good work up there yesterday. * hand salute *
Thanks for the invite Chase, but my family had made other plans for me this weekend. No hiking for me until next month.
I'm not sure I would have been worth much to you guys anyway - hiking 16 miles at this stage in the game would have been difficult. Doing trail maintenance along the way while hiking 16 miles would have done me in. Hopefully in a month or so I'll be up for longer hikes.
Sorry to have missed out on all the fun and great company.

Here are a few more pics of the adventure:
Munra Ridge - North End
Munra Ridge - South End
Upper Munra
Van Ahn Rim
Success!
Crossing Tanner Creek on the new bridge!
The Tanner Creek Trail is like Jurasic Park but we only saw Romann!
Many of the old bridges that were built over the side creeks on Tanner Creek are still there!
Finally - Don leaving refreshments for Chase & Cascade Hiker.

Re: Munra to Moffett to Rd. 777 Loop with PH 5/27/12
Thank you to everyone for this epic adventure! One of the the best hikes ever - even with the weather.
Still a lot to do on the lower half of the Moffet Trail but on the whole, I think this route is several hundred percent better.
Hard to add to the pics already up - great job everyone. Here is a map of the route Guy and I took: It came to 17.0 miles (about a half mile of backtracking included in that) and 4,800 total EG.
Here it is on GPSfly: http://gpsfly.org/g/1538
And a few pics I took:
The way ahead on Munra Ridge:
Looking south past the WWII guard station the snow got seriously deeper:
Guy on the Tanner Creek crossing log:
777 road is still a mess (but no problem at all for hikers). Some work has been done with a couple of mud/rock slides farther down but lots still to do. This is the worst I've ever seen it:
Looking uphill:
From the same spot as above, looking downhill:

I don't know how appropriate the pictures might be that the other hikers have of my pants from this hike.
Sorry if you were hiking behind me...
The pants are now retired.

Wow, those foggy pictures from Munra is something! I almost wish I joined the whole trek with you guys (less the 6 am start and the 16 miles). It's a good idea to make Portlandhikers' Trail Work Outings like this without much formality; everyone can go a comfortable distance and work at his own pace so more people can join. Tanner Creek valley is very interesting in its own way, and really deserves a better trail.
It was nice to meet with everyone - I've seen more Portlandhikers this Sunday than on all prior hikes combined! Special thanks to Chase and Cascadehiker for helping me move that log off the trail
