Japanese Garden - fall color update

With the less than ideal weather for taking in vistas this weekend, I'm thinking about staying in town to catch some local fall color in the Japanese Garden...unless the rain rips down all the leaves before tomorrow
It's been quite a long time since I've hiked through Forest Park and I'm looking forward to spending less than ten minutes in the car
Here's the link to a status report

pdxflowergirl, you can visit the Japanese Garden for free if you have a Washington County library card. Here's how:

Hurry the leaves are in their prime.
If its raining the colors are more intense and you miss the crowds especially at "The Tree"

Beware the crowds! I hear that unfortunately the crowds at the garden on October weekends have gotten pretty big. I lucked out when I was here three years ago and there were not a ton of people around, including at the famous tree, but things have changed, as Waffle Stomper's second photo shows!

Word to the wise, there are some jaw-dropping Japanese Maples in the Hoyt Arboretum that I think are superior to the ones down in the gardens. There's even one blood red one that you can walk inside like a scarlet four man tent. Incredible!
