2014 Fall Color thread -- sorry

Post by Double Tree » September 8th, 2014, 7:22 pm

As much as I mourn the imminent passing of summer...fall color can be wonderful. This past weekend there was the start of red vine maple along Highway 26 over Mt. Hood, and along Skyline Road from Highway 26. Other fall color sightings?

Yay! I've been waiting for this thread. I haven't seen any colors yet but can't wait to see all the PH pics showing my favorite time of the year :).

Why sorry? To me this is the most magical part of the year!

I'm sorry not because now is bad, but because it is so short - and then it is winter. For me that's a 6 month period without backpacking. So I'm very sorry. Reminds me of that car commercial: "It's the end of summer and time to celebrate" (because they have a car sale). I feel like throwing my shoe at the TV.

Oh yeah, this is about fall colors. Some of the berry leaves have turned magenta on Mt Adams.

why don't you go backpacking in winter

I go every month. Last month I missed was April 2011.

IMO fall is the best time of year to go backpacking notably the skeeters are dead.

I really want to leave it at that but… Its not blazing hot, most of the fires are fought, its cozy sleeping at night, the elk are bugling, campfires are coziest and last but not least the colors are outstanding.

We saw numerous vine maples turning yellows and reds, all below 2000', along the Quinalt River last weekend.

The vine maples in the foreground of the roadside Mount Hood view near the Vista Ridge TH were starting to turn as of last Thursday. I think they'll peak in the next week or two, for those who can't get enough of this spot:

(from a few years ago)

Should be a good year for color -- especially compared to last year, when the freak monsoons that come through during the first week of September stripped a lot of foliage away.

I agree with Granny - one of the prettiest times of year!

Tom :)
