2014 Mushroom thread

Post by joerunner » August 31st, 2014, 4:05 pm

I'm starting to see a lot of mushrooms up there. Just no Chantrelles yet. Anybody picking any edibles?

Not sure about edibles but I found these guys on a derivative of the Larch Crater hike last weekend.

Definitely there were a few early specimens of the classics on between Adams and St Helens the last two days, including 3 or 4 of the ones in the photo. One more rain up there like yesterday and we could be in for as similarly a prolific season as autumn 2013! .

Tons of shrooms on the Gunsight Butte trail but I don't know what they were. Some of them were a pale green varying to aqua.

I've been seeing a lot of them that are a purplish color. I have pictures on my home laptop that I will have to post later. I was up at Rainier last week and some of the mushrooms there looked like they were from Jurassic park.

I know nothing about mushroom ID. Can anyone recommend a book for a total beginner? Appreciate any help.
I've brought samples home and tried to find them on line but have never come up with a definitive ID.

'Mushrooms Demystified' is on sale at Powells on Hawthorne. Maybe elsewhere as well.

Some mushrooms will destroy your liver and require a transplant - if you don't die first

Subtle difference between good and bad mushrooms

Maybe you're better off with an expert human showing you

Maybe select a couple mushrooms that you can reliably identify

Thanks SE Ben. I will take a look at those.

RJ I was also thinking that it would be best to go with an expert. If I don't know what a mushroom is, I don't eat it. The only ones I can positively ID are Coral, Shaggy Manes and Morels.

A friend pulled maybe 150 bigger chanterelles from the Wallowas this past week.
