NGS data sheets < way cooler than title implies

Interested in lookouts or old logging camps?

Data sheets for geodetic survey markers contain a lot of technical data but they also describe the route used to reach the marker. These descriptions contain references to old roads, lookouts, logging camps, etc. in the area at the time the marker was recovered.

I used the Radial search to find the data sheet for the marker at the top of Larch Mt.

The data sheet for the Larch Mountain marker contains route descriptions used to find the marker over the years. In this case 1916, 1935, 1938, 1942, 1947, 1960.

A reference to "Camp A"! I believe this is road 550, the original Larch Mountain Road.

This will give you the writeups for all the PLC's (Public Land Corners) and most all the quarter makers as well. It also has most of the historical records to go along with it, so you can attempt to decipher the oldschool handwritten notes with the surveys were initially done. Surprising how many whiskey bottles are buried under those markers :lol: That might explain why the lines are a bit crooked sometimes!

Sample gem for you... you want an 1891 proposed road survey for the Larch Mtn Highway? Complete with marked homesteads and existing railroads? (Protip, don't try too hard to line these up with modern maps, they took a few liberties on scaling it seems...)

I've been playing with that toy for awhile. :)

I've found the PLC's on SAIL but I don't think the National Geodetic Survey markers are included in that database.

Would *this* be better? All the NGS markers for Multnomah County (I can get the others) plotted in GE with links to their datasheets
