PCTA Trail Work done at Fort Rains 11 June 2012

Post by rcPDX » June 11th, 2012, 4:49 pm

We had fabulous weather today and a great crew to finish the turnpike that was built during Trail Skills College back in April. This is on the PCT, on the Washington side of the Bridge of the Gods. Bruce wants everyone to know that he saw it during the heavy rains last week and it was working perfectly. Today we built one last section of the turnpike and filled in with gravel. This only took about an hour for our speedy crew.
Here's the finished turnpike.

Dennis and Sam power-brushed out about nearly a half-mile from the trailhead. The rest of us worked in the mud and water. We improved a stream crossing. We rehabilitated a turnpike built about 5 years ago - that is, we removed all the growth IN the turnpike, found the culverts, re-dug the ditches and made it all well again.

Lamar fixed a water crossing that was spread over 15 feet of trail, put the stream back in place and rebuilt the ditches.

Further up the trail, this is what the trail looked like.

The crew found the culvert, found the old stream bed, cleared the log out of the stream bed, cleared the mud out of the culvert entry, and it's flowing well again.

I found this nest, and we left the area around it alone.

Back near a cistern, the crew fixed the drainage and dredged out a good path for the water.

Thanks team for great work today.

Does anyone know the history of the grade the PCT follows between Icehouse Lake and Fort Rains? It's obviously an abandoned road or railroad grade.
