Slide Repair, Timberline Trail near Bald Mtn, 5/18/2014

Post by rcPDX » May 19th, 2014, 7:11 am

Pace led yesterday's work party in the sometimes pouring down rain. The section worked is on the Timberline trail, from Bald Mountain heading downhill towards the Muddy Fork Crossing. Five slides were improved for safe hiker passage.

Chris, one of the volunteers, is also a Wilderness Steward so he brought in permits to stock the permit box.

Second slide very close to first, this one needs another project to repair better but at least it's not as scary a step over now.

Third slide, a short sandy bit

Fourth slide, a long sandy stretch. Looked really bad from a distance, but there was a faint trail across.

Finally, a last slide we just touched up. There's just a boot-wide step-over to get across.

Nice! I love the sequences of pictures.

Seems pretty early to be up there.

I couldn't help but think of trombone slide repair when I read the subject. Maybe that's just because I play trombone for a living. :)

Thanks for all the work! I remember those sections from my Timberline hike last year- they were a little scary. Now they'll be much better.
Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.

Wow - appreciate all the hard work, but given the terrain (before shot below), it's an awfully high maintenance trail. Is rerouting at all possible? Even with the repair, it's still a bit sketchy.

Reroute is unlikely. Now that this section has a caretaker, we'll just keep maintaining it.

I think it's doable - looks worse in picture

The re-route is to go down Ramona Creek trail and cross Muddy Fork down below
