Douglas Trailhead Update 9/22/12

Post by dougandpearl » September 22nd, 2012, 9:40 pm

The drive to the Douglas Trailhead was as described, accurate to the .10 of a mile. However when we arrived at the lower parking area (as described in the driving instructions), it was not the same. The road up to the gravel quarry is completely blocked off - a series of steep ditches and berms all the way up, as well as purposely downed trees. It is clear this is designed to limit vehicle access to the gravel pit, however it also makes for a slightly difficult approach to trail. Be prepared to climb over trees. From the appearance of the lower parking lot, one could assume a future approach trail is in the works but as of right now, it is the "road" or bushwhacking which is not recommended. BUT! Once on the trail, it is lovely: a well maintained, wide, smooth ascent to the summit of Wildcat Mountain, well worth the trip!
