What is this cool-looking fungi?

Post by justpeachy » January 1st, 2014, 2:38 pm

I spotted this fungi in Forest Park the other day. Very cool-looking and not one that I've ever seen before. I have zero experience identifying mushrooms/fungi so I took a look through a mushroom book at the library and didn't spot this. I did some online searching and came across something called Bracket Fungus. Some of the pictures I found look similar to mine and some look way different, but maybe that's just how it is in the fungi world?

I don't know what it's called, but it's certainly beautiful.

Your best best is the ubiquitous turkeytails (Trametes versicolor), the most common of the zoned polypore species around. As its specific name implies, it can appear in many colors (green, dark brown, orangish, etc), but always with many "zones" and white outer rim.
