30+ mushrooms

The purpose of this forum is to help people identify things they've seen while out hiking: wildflowers, trees, birds, insects, small animals, animal tracks, even geographical features like buttes or streams

30+ mushrooms

Post by adamschneider » September 15th, 2013, 9:32 pm

While I was hiking to and from Gothic Basin in Washington's North Cascades on Wednesday, I saw a LOT of mushrooms, and I photographed a lot of them because there wasn't much else to take pictures of.

I've gotten pretty good at wildflower ID, but I don't know the first thing about fungus... so I figured I'd see if there's any mycophiles on here who'd like to take a crack at identifying some of these. I've numbered them from #1 to #33, but I'm sure there are some duplicates... like maybe #16 and #17 are the same species, or #28 and #29. And I know sometimes mushrooms change their shape significantly over the course of their life cycle.

Anyway, lemme know if you have any ideas... let the fungus-fest begin!

I'll give it a shot, Adam. The ones I know fairly well from frequent sightings:

1) Boletus edulis. (Porcini). Choice edible. It's looking like a good season for these. Saw huge ones fruiting in the Eagle Cap Lakes basin last week.

2) Russula rosacea, I think. Usually has a tell-tale pink stipe (stem).

3) Genus Amanita

5) Genus Russula. The stipe snaps like piece of chalk.

7) Definitely a lichen, not a fungus. Probably one of the Lungworts, genus Lobaria.

9) Coral fungi, G. Ramaria

10) Russula brevipes

11) Looks like Porphyrellus porphyrosporous.

12) Gomphus floccosus. (Scaly chanterelle, not edible)

14) Beautiful image...have no idea what it might be.

15) G. Boletus

16 and 17) Porcini again. You must tell me where you found these...pm me please!

19) Genus Cantherellus. (Chanterelle)

21) Genus Russula

26). Gomphus

29) Probably too mature to identify with certainty from the image alone.

32) False chanterelle. Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca

33) Russula genus.

Wow, thanks... I'm sure that took you far less time than it would have taken me to figure those out.

As for the location... these are all a 250-mile drive from Portland. You still need me to PM you? :)
