Mt Talbert Mondo Mystery Scat

Post by bookem » July 23rd, 2013, 8:58 pm

Yesterday I hiked Mt. Talbert with a friend and we came across this econo-sized scat next to the trail (keep in mind Mt. Talbert is not out in the wilderness but rather a stone's throw from I-205 and Clackamas Town Center). It doesn't really look canine at all. Ursine, maybe?

Does a bear poop in the woods?

Looks like bear. We live near Mt. Talbert and next to a green space. I see piles like this frequently during blackberry season.

A bear on Mt Talbert? That does not seem possible.

I think that is the scat of a really big raccoon or a previously constipated coyote.

Why not? There have been black bears in the Cleveland suburbs:

(Be sure to watch the chilling bear footage starting at 0:38).

Well, it also looks exactly like the scat that a coyote leaves after gorging on berries: black, soft, semi-digested, about the right size. It could be bear, I suppose, but I'd weigh it 95% - 5% coyote.

My husband runs on Mt Talbert frequently and one of his buddies told him they saw a cougar there with a half eaten deer. Could it be cougar?

His buddy did. I'll have him ask more questions and get more info.
