Mystery spiny growth on plants

Mystery spiny growth on plants

I'm totally stumped here...

Not even sure if it's animal, vegetable or mineral! :lol: The spines were sharp, like that of a cactus.

It was only growing on these bushes:

Help with ID'ing these is also requested.

This was up on Bear Point a couple weeks ago. Thoughts?
Will break trail for beer.
