You all are lucky!! I never see 'em!! I'll have to just pick a place n hideout for a while!
Only time I did see any was wayyyy back in college in Ashland...there were four or five of 'em sitting in this tree along a pretty busy walk way at night... they didn't seem to mind people going by...then again it was a pretty thick foliage kinda tree..

You can see them in Tryon Creek State park if you are lucky. They have a nest box near the nature trail that may have a family of saw-whet owls. You can also hear and see barred owls and great horned owls. I have seen the first two but yet to see the latter. I once saw a great horned owl at the Tualatin River Wildlife Refuge. Dusk is the best time for catching them. Listen for and follow their calls. A few weeks ago I had a conversation with an owl in Tryon Creek. It would call and I would return the call, then it would return my call. It went on for about 20 minutes but I had to leave before I could find it. It was fun just the same.

We have a large resident owl here on our land in Redland, OR. Its wings gotta be 4-5+ feet from tip to tip. I see him in the headlights occasionally. He's sure a noisy fella' at night

I thought I'd bump this thread up again. I've been routinely seeing owls in Tryon creek the last few weeks. Today I saw three great horned owls (possibly only two - maybe one twice). One was perched in a tree right on the trail I was able to get amazingly close until he flew away. The others were a little deeper in the woods. I could see them but needed binoculars.
They are often noticeable because of the robins mobbing them. A good adventure for kids. I saw them between 7:45 and 8:30. Mosquitoes also present. You may also see barred owls and saw whet owls.

Owls? I saw them 3 weeks in a row out in St Paul on Mahoney Road. Be forewarned though. It hangs around a veal farm. Personally, it makes me sick every time I drive by it. Anyway, I almost ran over it the first time I was out there! I was turning a corner (it had already landed in the middle of the road). It had something quite large (white and flappy -plastic looking) in it's grasp. I'm assuming it was packaging for the veal? I startled it and it took flight, that's when I narrowly hit it as it was so big it has to flap those wings hard enough to get some elevation. It's a very quiet and peaceful area, except for the farm. Spectacular photo opps out there...I got a few myself. None of the owl so far. Absolutely love your work! I'm just starting out myself part-time.
Take care and enjoy your summer!
Kathy

Thank you Kathy.
I bet the owls hang out at the farm because of the mice. Farms, mice and owls sort of go together I think.
