Volunteer for Trails - May with Washinton Trails Association

Post by Ryan Ojerio » April 17th, 2014, 11:50 am

Hello Hikers,

here is a list of upcoming events next month. Note that we do have work parties every Thursday, but I haven't listed them all here as we tend to chose the location only a week or two out. We'll also be doing regular 1/2 day mornings (9am-12pm) on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month starting in June.

Our 1/2 day crews will focus on near town projects like the new trail at Vancouver Lake, improving trails at Whipple Creek, Cape Horn and possibly more at Ridgefield NWR.

Come on out and see how fun and rewarding it can be to work on the trails. Got questions - give me a call at 360-722-2657 or email ryan@wta. org

- Thanks, Ryan

The Oaks to Wetlands wildlife Trail winds through majestic ancient oaks, through a doug-fir forest and onto the shores of the wetlands that are home to all sorts of birds, beaver, frogs, turtles and more. Volunteers needed to lend a hand spreading bark mulch to make the sometimes muddy trails more enjoyable for spring visitors. We'll also build drain dips to shed water during heavy rains, and prune back encroaching vegetation.

Join WTA for a morning of giving back to trails. We're offering a series of ½ day events aimed at engaging more youth and families in near-town stewardship projects. But the "Young at Heart" are welcome too! This crew will be constructing a new trail that will meander between Vancouver Lake and Buckmire Slough, just north of Vancouver Lake regional park.

Interested in trail work, but don't know a Pulaski from a Pruner? Come for a 1/2 day clinic (9am-1pm) that will introduce you to the basic tools and techniques for restoring trails to meet specs for safety and sustainability. Instruction provided by WTA's SW Regional Manager in an "outdoor classroom" e.g. trail at Lacamas Park.

Volunteers wanted for one or both days at this weekend event. Saturday night features an optional campout and potluck. Celebrate the 50th Anniversary year of Wilderness by giving back to this awesome trail that ascends to a former fire lookout site. Our project is brushing and treadwork on the middle portion of this 7 mile trail.

The Monument is expanding recreation opportunities as part of its five year strategic investment plan. WTA volunteers built nearly a mile of new trail last year leading up from the Ape Cave parking lot to the future site of a new viewpoint. Now that the snow's gone, we're back to work!
