Wallowas: Eagle Cap

Post by SE Ben » October 1st, 2014, 9:27 pm

The weather looks sunny for the next week in the Wallowas (and mostly above freezing at night). I'm planning on leaving this weekend or early next week to hike in Eagle Cap. I did the Lake Basin four years ago (W. Fork Wallowa River and Ice Lake) and again last year (E. Fork Wallowa R. and Polaris Pass).

I'd be interested in hiking in a different way this time -- maybe the tramway up Mt Howard and the traverse over to Aneroid Lake and then Polaris Pass (described in Sullivan's Eastern Oregon, Hike 52). Or Minam Lake by the W Lostine River.

I'd be glad to have company. Contact me if you're interested, especially if you'd like to carpool from the coast or Portland.

Here's my TR from 4 years ago.

Hey! Not sure if you left yet, but if you haven't I would love to join you. I am a recent college graduate and am taking some time off to relax before hitting the real world. I was supposed to leave on the 7th to backpack Mt. Hood, but my group fizzled out and I am looking to join another. Cheers!

Sounds good. I'll send you a message. Maybe we can meet up face to face in Portland Saturday and brainstorm.

Went and did the Timberline Trail w/Tyler (Back_Packer) last week. I'm still looking for company for a trip to the Wallowas and the weather is still looking mostly sunny w/daytime highs in the 50s... although the temps are looking like they'll drop close to or below freezing at night in the Lake Basin.

I'm pretty flexible for anytime in the next 2 weeks. A college roommate of mine gave me a maybe tonight so I need to touch base w/him tomorrow, though.

If you think you might be interested, maybe we should go for a run on Wildwood Friday pm or the NoPo RC Saturday 9:30 am or w/the Red Lizards Sun 8:30 am. Or whatever you suggest.

I'm planning on running the Lizards SBUX run on Sunday, but starting at 8am with the slower group. We'll probably be running 10 minute miles.

Hi Hiker,
I'll probably be at Starbucks at 8 Sunday. I'll only run 8 miles, though.

I'd like to hear about the vertical hail on your Timberline trip.

We should talk about the Wallowas, too. The days are getting short (down to 10.5 hours by next weekend) but I'd be up for a trip, especially if we found a couple more people to do it with so we could amuse each other around a campfire at night.

Ben,

Are you a member of "The Backpacking Bunch" meetup? Perhaps you can post the trip there...
